Amid continued detentions, World Cup watch party highlights Congolese community resilience

The two organizations that hosted the event wanted to bring the community together to remind them of their rights and the resources available to them as President Donald Trump’s administration continues heightened immigration enforcement in Maine and throughout the country.

Last week, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Billy Bassikissa, a Congolese community leader and Cumberland County Jail corrections officer. Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce said Bassikissa had a work permit that didn’t expire until 2030 and no criminal convictions.
